Dental cleanings (prophylaxis) consist in the removal of plaque and calculus and in polishing and removing all stains from the teeth.
Cleanings are performed depending on each child’s need. By the age of 3, cleanings are included in each check up. They are normally scheduled every 6 months to prevent excessive plaque buildup and take about 30-25 minutes. This will prevent the development of future gum problems. Since every child is assessed individually, children younger than 3 may also present plaque and calculus, and if that is the case, a cleaning will also be performed. Tooth cleaning, polishing and fluoride treatments are all part of your child’s prevention program.
